Clara Barton had multiple careers. She was a teacher, nurse, clerk, activist.When she was seventeen she became a teacher. In 1852 she opened her own school in North Oxford. The school grew to have more than 600 students. She wanted to be the principal but the town gave the job to a man. She was upset and moved to Washington D.C. in 1854. She worked in the U.S. Patent Office as a clerk.
In 1861 the American Civil War began. Clara quit her job when she saw a wounded soldiers without clothes and supplies. She helped where ever she was needed. She asked people to donate items such as handkercheifs, jelly, and paper for writing letters.
She gathered supplies from hundreds of people and an army surgeon nicknamed her the "Angel of the Battlefield". She nursed soldiers during many battles and in 1864 she became the superintendent of nurses. After the war ended she campaigned to find missing soldiers. In 1869 she went to Europe on a vacation and worked with the Red Cross. When she came back to the United States she founded the American Red Cross.
