Early Life
Clarissa Harlowe Barton was born on Christmas Day,1821. She and her family lived on a farm in Massachusetts. She was the youngest of five children. Her parents were Sarah and Stephen Barton.
As a child Clara was shy but smart. She was a very curious child and enjoyed horse riding and playing ball games with her brothers. When she was eleven she cared for her brother when he fell from a barn roof, displaying nursing capabilities at an early age. Her parents encouraged her education.
