Later Life
She resigned as president of the American Red Cross in 1904. She spent the last years of her life in Glen Echo, Maryland. During these years she enjoyed horse riding, visiting with people, gardening, and reading books. She won many medals such as the Iron Cross, the Cross of Imperial Russia, and the International Red Cross Medal. She died of double pneumonia on April 12, 1912.
